CALGARY, AB — Siksika Off-Reserve Affordable Housing (SORAH) celebrated a landmark moment on Monday, June 8, 2026, with the Official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Erin Woods Indigenous Housing Development. The ceremony marks a significant step forward in addressing the off-reserve housing needs of Siksika Nation and Indigenous members living in the city.
The 60-unit development was made possible through a combination of land and financial support. The City of Calgary awarded land at book value through its Non-Market Land Sale Program. That contribution was paired with up to $4.5 million in capital funding from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund, and a further $4.3 million through Maa’too’maa’taapii Aako’iyii’piaya, the City’s Indigenous Housing Program. The project was also developed in meaningful partnership with an Elders Advisory Committee.
The development reflects a broader commitment to the well-being of Siksika Nation members and Treaty 7 urban Indigenous peoples. With nearly half of the Nation’s membership living off-reserve, many of them in Calgary, the project is expected to have a lasting impact on families seeking secure, culturally grounded, affordable homes. Plans for the development include a Welcome Centre designed to serve as a gathering place for the community.

“We know that housing is a fundamental human need, and affordable housing has become increasingly difficult to find across Canada. Siksika Nation is both excited and grateful for this announcement. With nearly half of our Nation’s membership living off-reserve—many of whom reside in Calgary—this project will have a meaningful and lasting impact for our members and their families. I am excited to see the positive impacts that secure, affordable housing will have on our Nation members’ lives.”
~ Samuel Crowfoot, Chief of Siksika Nation
“Our Government is committed to increasing housing supply and improving affordability for Canadians. This groundbreaking marks an important milestone for the City of Calgary and SORAH, demonstrating how innovative partnerships can help bring more homes, faster. We congratulate everyone involved in advancing this project and creating more housing opportunities for Calgarians.”
~ Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary, Member of Parliament for Calgary Confederation on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure
“At SORAH, these are exactly the kinds of moments we work towards. Sixty families will have access to a home that honours who they are and where they come from, alongside a Welcome Centre that will serve as a true gathering place for our community. We are deeply grateful to the City of Calgary, our Elders Advisory Committee, and all of the partners who helped bring this vision to life.”
~ Max Lloyd, General Manager, Siksika Off-Reserve Affordable Housing (SORAH)
